Abstract

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has played a vital role in the development and modernization of the telecommunications sector in India. Liberalization of investment policies and the opening of the telecom market to foreign investors have attracted significant capital inflows, technological expertise, and global managerial practices. These developments have contributed to the rapid expansion of telecom infrastructure, improvement in service quality, and increased competition among service providers. As a result, the Indian telecom sector has emerged as one of the largest and fastest-growing communication markets in the world. This study examines the role of FDI in strengthening the Indian telecom sector within the framework of Global Value Chains. Telecommunications infrastructure is a critical enabler of global production networks, facilitating digital communication, cross-border services, and integration into international markets. The research evaluates how foreign investment has supported network expansion, technological upgrades such as 4G and 5G services, and operational efficiency among major telecom operators including Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and Reliance Jio. The findings indicate that FDI has significantly strengthened telecom infrastructure, improved financial performance, and enhanced India’s capacity to participate in global digital value chains. However, challenges such as regulatory issues, high spectrum costs, and financial pressures on telecom firms remain important concerns. The study concludes that sustained foreign investment and supportive policy frameworks are essential for ensuring long-term growth and global competitiveness of the Indian telecom sector.
