Abstract

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) plays a pivotal role in advancing sustainable development in India by supplementing domestic capital, fostering technological innovation, and integrating the economy into global value chains. As one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies, India leverages FDI to accelerate industrialization, enhance infrastructure, and promote inclusive growth. FDI inflows contribute significantly to employment generation, skill development, and productivity enhancement across sectors such as renewable energy, manufacturing, services, and digital technology. In alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) advocated by the United Nations, FDI supports clean energy transitions, sustainable urbanization, and responsible consumption and production patterns. Moreover, FDI facilitates the transfer of environmentally sound technologies and global best practices, strengthening India’s capacity to address climate change and resource efficiency challenges. Government initiatives such as Make in India, Digital India, and liberalized FDI policies have improved investor confidence and ease of doing business. However, the developmental impact of FDI depends on regulatory frameworks, sectoral allocation, and the absorptive capacity of domestic industries. Strategic policy direction is therefore essential to ensure that FDI aligns with environmental protection, social equity, and long-term economic resilience. Overall, FDI serves as a catalyst for sustainable economic transformation in India by bridging investment gaps, enhancing competitiveness, and promoting balanced regional development. Its effective governance and alignment with sustainability objectives remain crucial for achieving inclusive and environmentally responsible growth.
