Abstract

This study examines the growing impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the higher education sector, focusing specifically on undergraduate students within a private university framework affiliated with Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), Delhi. The rapid integration of AI technologies has transformed traditional pedagogical paradigms, driving structural shifts in student engagement, academic productivity, and personalized learning environments. Employing a quantitative descriptive research design based on empirical survey data (N=100), this paper evaluates student awareness, usage behaviors, functional applications, perceived academic outcomes, and associated institutional challenges. The empirical findings reveal a high penetration rate: 90% of respondents demonstrate active awareness of AI tools, and 65% utilize them regularly for academic tasks. The primary operational deployment centers on assignment formulation (40%) and secondary research compilation (30%). While 70% of respondents report immediate improvements in academic performance and 80% affirm AI’s role in enabling personalized learning, significant pedagogical counternarratives emerge. These include over-reliance on automated problem-solving, potential declines in independent critical thinking, academic integrity ambiguities, and data privacy vulnerabilities. Ultimately, the study presents a structured, human-centered governance framework and strategic policy recommendations to assist higher education institutions in balancing technological innovation with academic rigor.
